A number of events have been planned around Youth Day, Friday June 16, in Hout Bay.
From soccer and entertainment to career expos, these events aim to celebrate the town’s youth while also remembering those who have fallen victim to violence.
The Hangberg Educational Development Movement will be staging its eleventh Youth Day event at the Hangberg Sports and Recreational Centre.
Organiser Philip Frans said celebrations would include face-painting for children, games in the hall and performances by the Harvest Youth Project students.
“American students from Chicago who visited us in December will also be returning for the celebrations, and there will be a career expo at the centre on Saturday June 17 where youngsters will have a chance to discuss
career opportunities with them.”
On Sunday June 18, a memorial service will be held at the Hangberg civic centre for the three Hangberg youngsters who have lost their lives to violence this year.
Ward councillor Roberto Quintas said this would be an inter-faith memorial services for Junaid Phillips, Deswin Brown and Ryno Solomons.
A friendly youth soccer match has also been organised by the DA’s Good Hope branch on June 16 at the Hangberg Astroturf, from 10am to 1pm.
Teams comprising boys and girls from Hangberg and Imizamo Yethu will compete for a floating trophy, the DA Youth Cup.
Players between the ages of 13 and 15 will be transported to and from Imizamo Yethu, and the event is aimed at building relationships between the two communities.
