Pennies for Princesses

■ The seventh annual Pennies for Princesses Women’s Day fundraiser, hosted by Cape Community Newspapers, which publishes Sentinel News, was held at Cape Point Vineyards, in Noordhoek, on Saturday August 12. Speakers at the event included entrepreneur Terine Lott-Cupido who spoke about what it takes to start one’s own business; lifestyle blogger Melissa Thomas who spoke about her journey from being anorexic to bulimic to living a healthy life; clinical psychologist Carin-Lee Masters who spoke about her work as an advice columnist and the importance of showing compassion; and musician Trudy Rushin who spoke about the transformative power of music. Radio personality Guy McDonald was the MC and the beneficiary of the R50 000 raised through ticket sales was St George’s Home for Girls in Wynberg. Since its inception, Pennies for Princesses has raised more than R350 000 for Ons Plek shelter for girls; the Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children; the Community Intervention Centre; the Mitchell’s Plain Network Opposing Abuse; Grandmothers Against Poverty and Aids; Dews of Quietness and St George’s Home for Girls. And guests also had the opportunity to walk away with some great sponsored prizes, among them stays at the Radisson Blu Le Vendome, the Townhouse Hotel and the Lawhill luxury apartments, and beauty treatments valued at R10 000 and R15 000 respectively, from Lokkima and Cryo Contouring.
