Open-water swim at Waterfront

Theodore Yach and Michelle Weber, ambassadors of the Waterfront Rotary Swim.

A new open-water timed swim will be launched on Saturday October 13, when swimmers take to the Waterfront Canal for a mile and half-mile timed swim.

It will also be a day of family fun at the new Battery Park, in the V&A Waterfront’s Canal District.

Theodore Yach, well-known open water swimmer who has just completed his 108th Robben Island crossing, is one of the ambassadors supporting the swim.

“The Waterfront Rotary Canal Swim is an event for the whole family in a beautiful, unique, and safe environment,” said Mr Yach.

The event will see swimmers take to the canal in the morning for a one mile timed accredited event, along with a half-mile swim.

In the afternoon, corporates from the V&A precinct will pit their creative design skills against strong competition, to participate in an “Anything that Floats” event. There will be adequate teams of water safety officials at the event.

Michelle Weber, who is also also supporting the Waterfront Rotary Swim as an ambassador, said she was excited about the event because Rotary is using the funds to uplift local communities.

“The venue we will be swimming in is exciting for open water swimming – there aren’t many like it and I can’t wait to experience it.”

The event will also be making waves to raise awareness of the increasing impact of pollution on oceans and beaches.

The Rotary Club of Waterfront is partnering with the V&A Waterfront to launch this initia-
tive during the Oceans Life Festival. The event will place strong emphasis on the importance of education and awareness of the state of the oceans (especially plastic) which will be driven through collaboration with the Two Oceans Aquarium. Schools will be encouraged to create designs in an “Art from Ocean trash” competition. Added to this will be food, fun and entertainment.

Funds raised will be channelled to community projects of the Rotary Club of Waterfront and the V&A.

Applications for the swim are still open at www.bigbayevents.co.za
