A 33-year-old man has appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court charged with the murder of a Hangberg couple who died in a fire last week, say police.
On Tuesday November 7, at 10am, firefighters received a call that houses had been set alight behind Saldanha Court in Salamander Road, Hangberg, said City Fire and Rescue Service spokesman Jermaine Carelse.
“Fire crews from Hout Bay and Lakeside responded and found that two structures were destroyed. Firefighters extinguished the blaze at 11.45pm. A man and a woman were confirmed to have died in the fire,” he said, adding that it was unknown what had caused the fire and the scene had been handed over to the police.
Hout Bay police chief Captain Jerome Syster said they had arrested a suspect the following day after receiving a tip-off that he had allegedly set the house alight.
“The man was charged with double murder and appeared in Wynberg Magistrate’s Court last Friday November 10. We can’t state the exact details as the matter is still under investigation,” Captain Syster said.
