Hout Bay-based educational arts non-profit Lalela is the 2018 recipient of the Community Chest Impumelelo Social Innovation Award.
Lalela was recognised for its role in arts education.
Community Chest chief executive Lorenzo Davids said: “We applaud the excellent work these deserving organisations have been doing in their community, in line with Community Chest’s four core values: facilitating social change within health and education, income-generation, and community development.”
Following a thorough judging process, comprising both written submissions and verbal presentations, Lalela was awarded the Platinum Award from a final shortlist of 28 NGOs on November 28 at a glittering occasion at the Artscape theatre.
“We are extremely proud to be recognised for our work in the communities we serve and the contribution to innovative educational methods to facilitate social change,” said Lalela chief operations officer, Cat Steyn-Rieper.
“The award has recognised the uniqueness of Lalela providing educational arts for at-risk youth to spark creative thinking and awaken the entrepreneurial spirit, something we strive towards each day.”
