An Imizamo Yethu preschool in need of assistance recently received donations and help with repairs.
Last week, Sentinel reported that Siyazama Pre School in Kontana Street was appealing for help with repairs, plumbing and to feed its pupils (“IY preschool pleads for help”, Sentinel, March 22).
The preschool was assisted by HIKEFOR, the Hiking Fellowship of Rotary and sponsors, SPAR and JACKhammer, according to principal and Grade R teacher, Funisele Cele.
HIKEFOR chairman, Joe Schwach, said so far they had received up to R9 500 in donations but want to get to R20 000.
There are still maintenance problems plaguing the preschool, according to Ms Cele.
“We still need assistance with a security gate as well as repairs to our roof and a sponsor to help with feeding the children,” she said.
“The toilets are leaking, the roof is leaking and the wooden shed the school children use to finish their homework needs windows and roof and wall insulation. There’s also water coming through the crèche walls in winter after heavy rains,” Mr Schwach said.
Maputi Klaas, from IY, who helped paint the exterior walls of school, is repairing the toilets, Mr Schwach added.
Sentinel followed up with the City, which owns the building, to ask if they will consider investigating the preschool’s roof, as Ms Cele thinks it could be asbestos.
The City said: “We have received the enquiry and are looking into it. We will provide a response as soon as we have all the details.”
