Two Hout Bay sites feature on a new fold-out heritage map that has been produced by the City of Cape Town’s transport and urban development authority.
Information of about 20 sites of interest around Cape Town is included on the map. All these are easily accessible via the MyCiTi bus routes.
Imizamo Yethu is listed as site 16. “Walking tours are available for visitors interested in exploring the township’s diverse culture and lifestyle,” the information brief reads.
The Hout Bay Museum also features on the map:
“The Hout Bay Museum is situated in Andrews Road and focuses on the history of Hout Bay, its people, forestry, mining, and fishing industry.
“The museum’s collection and displays explore the cultural and natural history of the area. Artefacts include old photographs of Hout Bay and the history of the Khoi and San here, land protests and how the township of Imizamo Yethu was established. Items from shipwrecks are also on display.”
Iona Everett, chairperson of the board of trustees at the Hout Bay Museum, welcomed its inclusion on the site map.
“Obviously the more feet we can get through the door, the better for the museum,” she said.
“We are already on the Red Bus tour route, which caters more to foreign visitors. So we are pleased to also be on the MyCiTi route as well.”
The City’s mayoral committee member for transport and urban development, Brett Herron, said the heritage maps would give commuters the chance to explore their heritage using public transport.
“The map includes two of Cape Town’s most beautiful heritage spots: the Bo-Kaap and Company’s Garden. It also features the Slave Lodge, District Six, the Robben Island Museum, and other memorials, places of worship and sites of interest.
“I want to encourage residents to make the most of Heritage Month and to use the MyCiTi service to experience our heritage and culture and be a tourist in your own city.
“This informative map will assist with identifying and learning more about our heritage sites.”
Commuters can access the MyCiTi heritage map free of charge at all MyCiTi stations and participating retailers, or they can get copy at https://myciti.org.za/docs/4325/MyCiTi_Heritage%20Map_2017.pdf.
