The Fugard Theatre will stage Athol Fugard’s The Road to Mecca from Tuesday March 27 in honour of the playwright’s 85th birthday. Inspired by Helen Martins, who lived in Nieu-Bethesda and created The Owl House, the story is about a woman’s desire for personal and artistic freedom within the narrow confines of a conservative and highly religious community in the Karoo in early 1970s apartheid South Africa. Veterans Sandra Prinsloo and Marius Weyers play the roles of Miss Helen and Reverend Marius Byleveld. The show runs until Saturday April 21. Tickets cost from R130 to R230. Book through Computicket or The Fugard Theatre box office on 021 461 4554. Pictured, from left, Emily Child, Sandra Prinsloo and Marius Weyers who will perform in The Road to Mecca.
