Cape Town City Ballet’s upcoming season features a triple bill of neo-classical ballets by Ashley Killar as well as firm favourite, Coppélia.
Says Chief Executive of CTCB, Professor Elizabeth Triegaardt: “With this season, we are delighted to once again show our loyal audiences the versatility of our dancers by expanding the repertoire through our special collaboration with Ashley Killar, while at the same time also treating fans to a perennial classic such as Coppélia.”
“Shades of Love”, a programme of three contrasting ballets choreographed by Killar, will be on stage at the Artscape Theatre from Saturday May 7 to Sunday May 22. Danced to music by Benjamin Britten, Béla Bartók and Maurice Ravel, “Shades of Love” includes Towards Illusion, The Miraculous Mandarin and Sarabande – each ballet portraying varying aspects of love.
Audiences are advised that due to its adult subject matter, The Miraculous Mandarin will be replaced at matinee performances by Glazu-nov Variations and pas de deux from Beauty and the Beast and Romeo and Juliet.
Tickets for evening performances of “Shades of Love” range from R120 to R220 and for matinees from R100 to R180.
Following the run of “Shades of Love”, the production of Coppélia will enjoy a short season from Wednesday May 25 to Sunday May 29. Based on the well-known story by E.T.A. Hoffmann, Coppélia is family fun at the ballet personified. The magical tale focuses around Dr Coppelius, a mechanical doll-maker, and his fascination for his favourite doll, Coppélia, and the romance between Swanilda and Franz.
Accompanied by the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra at selected performances, the orchestra’s young resident conductor, Brandon Phillips, will take his bow conducting the CTCB for the first time. Tickets for performances accompanied by the orchestra range from R110 to R160 and for performances danced to recorded music, R50.
