This year Thrive celebrates the 10th anniversary of the schoolsEnviroQuiz/Art competition.
Since 2009 Thrive has partnered with Sentinel News to organise its annual EnviroQuiz/Art event for schools in Hout Bay. In 2015 invitations were extended to schools outside of the area, resulting in 25 school teams entering the exciting competitions for the last three years.
Due to the water crisis and the next possible waste crisis due to the rapid filling of existing landfill sites in the Cape Town area, Thrive has chosen to raise awareness around waste minimisation and the pollution of our precious water resources.
Waste and water are two of the five Thrive pillars of sustainability. The other pillars are energy, local food and biodiversity.
To celebrate the 10th anniversary, all local nursery schools have been invited to enter the EnviroArt competition. The theme for preschools is Water and Me.
Each preschool will select eight drawings or paintings and mount them on a board. This combined artwork can form an educational exhibit at the school and be a reminder to children and adults about the value of our precious water.
As with previous years, the study material will be published in the Sentinel News as a series of five articles written by Annabel Ryder, one of Thrive’s early initiators
and passionate sustainability advocate. These articles will also be available for download on the Thrive and Sentinel News web-
sites.
The panel of judges for the 2018 EnviroQuiz will Annabel Ryder; Jaci van Niekerk, from UCT’s department of environmental
and geographical science; and waste experts from the City of
Cape Town and WastePlan. Andy Le May will return as the quiz master.
For the EnviroArt competition, schools are invited to create a three-dimensional educational wall piece made from recycled materials only, to promote awareness regarding issues of waste.
The artists and judges, Lissa Claassens and Mambakwedza Mutasa, would like to see pupils thinkingdeeplyaboutthe
topic.
Several schools have entered the competition previously and have educational wall pieces on display focusing on Water and Energy.
The live competition will take place at Kronendal Primary School on Friday September 7. Schools will compete for eco prizes donated by WastePlan, and individuals will answer questions on the topic of Waste and Water for 20 spot prizes donated by local businesses.
