A sad goodbye was held for Hout Bay Tennis Club last weekend, with a final social game played on the beloved Museum Court.
Club chairman Rob Picard, committee member Trevor Stander and tennis coach Mike Lewis held a farewell for the club on a rather moody and misty Saturday May 4.
The tennis club has been part of the Hout Bay community for almost 50 years, but it has had to close because the land it was on is owned by the Hout Bay Museum, and the Denis Goldberg Foundation’s House of Hope will now be built there, (“House of hope centre closer to reality”, Sentinel, April 26).
A few club members attended the official handing back of the land to the museum, which was represented by its chairperson, Sue Ball, and manager Jonty Dreyer. The House of Hope will be an educational centre where disadvantaged youth from Hangberg and Imizamo Yethu will be able to take part in arts-and-culture activities.
