The Cape Premier League junior section took place at the weekend, and 2022 champions were crowned at the WPCC Wally Wilson Oval.
District Sixers took honours in the under-15 section with victory over Devil’s Peak Dragons. Sixers won by 15 runs after bowling out Dragons for 91 in the 15th over.
Caleb Jonkers was the pick of the bowlers, only allowing 10 runs in his three overs.
Ebrahim Fakir and Keegan Borst both chipped in with a pair each.
Sevi Barlow top scorer for Dragons with 20 runs.
Earlier in the day Sixers and Dragons won their semi-finals against West Coast Outlaws and Bo-Kaap Phantoms, respectively.
In the semis, Sixers chased the 112 target set by Outlaws inside 14 overs while only losing four wickets.
Joshua Neill was the one who took matters into his own hands for the Sixers, scoring 54 off 34 balls, a third half century in the tournament for him.
Dragons were set a total of 123 by Phantoms in their own semi-final and successfully chased. Shadley Allie top scored with 68 having faced 47 balls.
He also made three half centuries in the games.
When it came to bowling, both sides shared wickets evenly among bowlers with Reece Theunis of Dragons, Ethan Leroy and Jamie Hundermark of Phantoms the only bowlers to take two wickets.
In the under-13s, Phantoms were taking on Outlaws and the match was yet to resume at the time of print production.
Patriots took honours in the under-12 in a game against Phantoms, winning by 37 runs. The two sides beat Dragons and Outlaws in their respective semi-finals.
The under-11s went to Hoeri Kwaggo Bulls who defeated Outlaws in the final. In the under-10s, it was the Outlaws who won against Patriots.
The tournament is the brainchild of Ziyaad Desai who’s idea was to develop cricket from the ground up, all while club and junior cricketers rub shoulders with franchise and former professional players.
Eight Cape Town teams take part in the T20 competition. They are Atlantic Pirates, Bo-Kaap Phantoms, Cape Vikings, District Sixers, Devil’s Peak Dragons, Peninsula Patriots, West Coast Outlaws and the Hoeri Kwaggo Bulls
The seniors completed their competition a month ago, with Devil’s Peak Dragons defending their title against District Sixers. Only Cape Vikings have won the title other than Dragons in the competition’s four year existence. One year the competition didn’t take place because of the Covid-19 enforced lockdown.
