Documenting shipping’s rich history

The chairman of the Ship Society of South Africa, George Hendrie

Despite challenges in the maritime industry, the Ship Society of South Africa continues to do a remarkable job in keeping and promoting the history of ships and shipping in South Africa, particularly in Cape Town.

The organisation consists of about 100 members who are all marine enthusiasts who work together to record the rich history. Founded 65 years ago, the society’s resources have improved over the years and they are now able to offer private and corporate members team building events, management meetings and digital projection facilities.

The organisation hosts guest speakers every first Thursday of the month followed by film screenings, general knowledge quizzes and other events.

The organisation receives marine-related books and DVDs from donations, which they sell to keep the society going.

Ship Society of South Africa chairman, George Hendrie, admitted that it’s not an easy ship to sail, but because of their shared passion and mutual goal, they are managing.

“We rent this space from Transnet and for an organisation that mostly relies on subscriptions, it does hit our pockets,” said Mr Hendrie. He said their refreshment centres and donations come in handy and every Thursday corporate members hold training sessions and farewell parties in the club.

The society’s books date back as far back as a century and their comprehensive shipping books library tells a story of its own.
