The Hout Bay Refugee Community (HBRC), in partnership with Community Cohesion, celebrated World Refugee Day on Saturday June 18. The event was in aid of supporting victims of xenophobia and gave refugees the opportunity to share a meal, each other’s stories and mainly to acknowledge that there is no space in Hout Bay for such prejudice. The event was supported by the CPF, Community Crime Prevention (CCP) and a number of generous residents who made donations towards the catering. Hout Bay station commander, Lieutenant Colonel Bongani Mtakati, spoke about how crime was the common enemy in society and not our fellow Africans. Community Cohesion’s Bronwyn Moore said it was the first time such an event was celebrated in Hout Bay and great things were in store for next year.
