The City of Cape Town has identified two possible sites in Hangberg for the development of the much anticipated housing scheme known to locals as Dallas.
This comes after the housing development was halted earlier this year following the outcome of a health risk assessment which included an air quality study (“Stench halts housing,” Sentinel August 26).
The report indicated that Erf 8474, the property where the housing development was due to be built, was not suitable for residential development.
Mayoral committee member for human settlements, Benedicta van Minnen, said an air quality study had been done for both new sites and the outcome indicated that the sites were suitable for development.
“The City will appoint consultants to undertake the planning processes and hopes to obtain the required approvals to continue with the development,” she said.
Peace and Mediation Forum (PMF) secretary Warren Abrahams said the PMF and residents based in the temporary relocation area were pleased to hear the project would continue.
He said the PMF, in partnership with provincial and local Government, as well as Oceana, was looking at an alternative, sustainable and feasible way to use Erf 8474.
He said feedback would be given to the community in due course.
