Hout Bay’s Urban Brewing Co. scooped a prestigious Silver Award for their Monkey’s Paw Pilsner, at the fourth annual South African National Beer Trophy (SANBT) competition, at the Beerhouse, in Cape Town.
This is the second year in a row that the Urban Brewing Co. has been recognised at the SANBT.
Last year, the brewery walked away with a prestigious Gold Award for their Judas Peak Blonde Ale and a Silver Award for their Monkey’s Paw Pilsner.
The 2018 SANBT is the largest beer-tasting competition in Africa to date, with 212 entries and more than 20 judges.
The panel included official Beer Judge Certification Programme judges. The Urban Brewing Co. is situated on Harbour Road next to Hout Bay’s Bay Harbour Market, and their beer maker, Jörg Finkeldey, is crafting beers inspired by the immediate environment in Hout Bay, from spring water sourced from the Hout Bay mountains.
The brewery has become a popular destination in Hout Bay for craft beer enthusiasts.
“Winning this award means that our beer is recognised by a panel of judges as being of exceptional standard and outstanding quality.
“Winning a medal for two consecutive years at the South African National Beer Trophy (and also at various other competitions) tells us that our beer passed the very strong quality attribute of consistency,” Mr Finkeldey said.
The judges were very impressed with the quality of the beers entered this year, and this led to the pass rate being pushed up to 39/50 to be awarded a silver medal.
