Chapman’s Peak Drive tollbooth operator Nobesuthu Kolisi worries that the motorists who pass her booth daily could be giving her more than just money.
Ms Kolisi works for Entilini Operations, which holds the concession to operate the Chappies toll plaza.
The scenic drive – stretching for 9km through 114 curves from Hout Bay to Noordhoek – has been declared an essential service and is open 24/7 during lockdown.
Ms Kolisi, who lives in Imizamo Yethu with her younger sister, says the company has been very good about protecting employees – picking them up and dropping them off at their homes and giving them masks, gloves and hand sanitiser – but she fears there’s still a risk of being infected by the next person she says hello to at her window.
“I know how the virus is spread, and it does concern me when I handle money,” she says.
“I don’t want to give the virus to my sister. We are both very careful at home and use soap and water to wash our hands regularly.”
She says she is grateful to the company for looking after her, as many in her community have lost their jobs.
“I’m very fortunate to be working. Others should now just stay at home so we can flatten the curve, beat the virus and continue with our normal lives.”
Entilini Operations spokesman Mark Jacobs says Chapman’s Peak is deemed essential because it is an easy gateway in the event of an emergency.
But during the lockdown there is no running, no cycling, no picnics and no dog walking. Day passes have been suspended.
“We love to welcome visitors, but right now we are asking you to stay home while the lockdown restrictions are in place,” Mr Jacobs says. “We are looking forward to welcoming you back when restrictions are lifted.”
