The Hout Bay-based 790 Youth Rec Club has appealed to the community for help to run its school holiday programme.
The club’s youth co-ordinator, Roscoe Jacobs, said violence and abuse should be tackled throughout the year, not just during the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children Campaign, which starts today, Friday November 25.
Mr Jacobs, said everything should be done to stop children becoming victims of violence and abuse if the country hoped to break “the cycle of violence”.
He pointed to a study by the Centre for Justice and Crime Prevention which found youth who were victims of violence were more likely to commit crime than those who weren’t.
The club’s holiday programme, he said, stopped children and crime connecting, but it needed more support.
“Businesses and residents must realise that supporting this programme will help reduce the possibility of a child becoming a victim and perpetrator of violence and crime,” he said.
