Soccer season series gets teens reading

A book by Jayne Bauling, Playmaker, will be launched on Friday August 12 at the Silikamva High School in Imizamo Yethu.

FunDza Literacy Trust will be co-hosting the launch, adding in some creativity of its own in the form of in-house poet Ndibulelele Sotondoshe, as well as T-shirt and book give-aways to lucky pu- pils.

The book is published by Cover2Cover and was donated to Silikamva by the FunDza Literary Trust, as part of an ongoing programme to get South Africans read- ing.

FunDza has supplied over 60 000 exciting accessible teen books to over 400 schools and literacy organisations around the country, and the feedback from teachers and reading groups has been overwhelmingly positive.

FunDza, said one beneficiary, has started a “reading revolution”.

Ms Bauling is an award-winning writer of many youth books, having won the 2012 Gold Sanlam Prize for Youth Literature, the 2011 Maskew Miller Longman literature award for novels in Eng- lish and the 2009 Macmillan Writer’s Prize for Africa, among others.

She is also the author of Soccer Secrets, the ninth book in Cover2Cover’s Harmony High series.
