As South Africa commemorated Mandela Day on Monday July 18, Hout Bay High School partnered with Lalela to mobilise pupils to beautify a number of areas at the school, most notably creating a pop-up Lalela Gallery at the school’s entrance.
As part of the project, they also improved the girl’s and boy’s toilets and repainted the Lalela art room under direction of Firdous Hendricks and mural artist Ramon Mellett.
Guests on Mandela Day included American actor Ethan Hawke, his wife Ryan and their family, and Mr Hawke’s personal trainer Strider Clarke. According to its website, Lalela provides educational arts for at-risk youth to spark creative thinking and awaken the entrepreneurial spirit. Over 200 pupils from Hout Bay High and Sentinel Primary participated in the Mandela Day event.
