Pupils from five Hout Bay schools can look forward to practising with new, sponsored kit.
The official handover of the sporting goods took place at Silikamva High School on Friday May 24, and principal Siphathisiwe Nkala-Nkohla thanked the sponsors.
“We are an academically driven school but we also recognise the importance of sports and are very excited about the donations of the sporting kits,” she said.
“For our youth in Hangberg and Imizamo Yethu, there aren’t many activities to keep them occupied, but when there’s sport opportunities in their communities, it starts to encourage healthy habits. Sport can reduce the influence of drug abuse and teenage pregnancy impacting their lives and communities.”
Hout Bay High School, Nowers High School Academy, Hout Bay Primary School and Sentinel Primary School also received new kit, according to Hout Bay Leopards Sports Hub (HBLSH), one of the sponsors.
“I always wanted to plough back into my community. Our kids face many challenges every day. Parents who leave their homes for work in the morning, don’t know what problems their kids are going through,” said HBLSH co-ordinator and Hangberg resident Ricardo Phillips
“Each of the schools received two sets of netball and football kits as well as 10 soccer balls and 10 netballs. The schools also received training equipment, cones, hurdles, step ladders, bibs, whistles, stopwatches and coach tracksuits. Our future goals are to introduce rugby, athletics and MMA boxing to the schools” he said.
Hout Bay High School principal Juan Julius said: “There’s no playing fields for our learners in Imizamo Yethu and Hangberg. If they do find a field to play on, it’s overcrowded. I’m very grateful for these donations, and I’m very thankful for the coaches who sacrifice their time to help our kids become better citizens of Hout Bay.”
