Disa Primary School is appealing for assistance with its Read and Lead campaign to encourage children to read.
“The Read and Lead programme at Disa, originally began before the Covid pandemic, and became hugely successful in teaching our children valuable reading and language skills, and we are very excited to have started the programme up once again,” said Grade 2 teacher Sarah Aupiais.
“We have a wonderful group of dedicated volunteers from the Hout Bay community coming to our school every Friday morning to read with our Grade 2 children. Our children are thoroughly enjoying listening to the stories and reading their own books with the volunteers, and the children give shrieks of delight each time the teachers announce that the volunteers are ready to take their groups.”
Reading volunteer and member of the Hout Bay Men’s Shed, John Barbe, said about 15 volunteers drawn from the Men’s Shed and the Hout Bay/Llandudno community dealt with about 90 pupils, each of them taking about six pupils at a time.
“With further volunteers, this could encompass additional pupils and or schools,“ he said.
