Disa Primary School is hoping to feed more mouths again this winter through its annual feeding scheme.
The Jar of Hope campaign was launched last year by Disa Primary School teacher Anri Wessels to celebrate Mandela Day.
“The launch was an incredible success. We received 300 jars from all over Hout Bay and even some empty jars from as far away as Gauteng. This generosity allowed us to provide soup to between 1 200 and 1 800 people.
“The Jar of Hope project involves filling jars or zip-lock bags with dry ingredients. When mixed with boiling water, these ingredients create a warm, nourishing soup that can feed four people. Last year, we distributed these jars to preschool learners in the communities of IY and Hangberg. Due to the overwhelming success and the positive impact we saw, we are excited to continue the project again this year for Mandela Day,“ Ms Wessels said.
Coffee jars and mayonnaise jars, butter containers and zip-lock bags are all suitable to hold the ingredients of rice, soup mix, lentils and a stock cube.
“We hope to expand our reach and help even more people in need, creating a lasting positive impact in the community. We need assistance with empty jars, containers, zip-lock bags and ingredients to support our activities. We definitely need more volunteers to help us achieve our goals and make a bigger difference,” Ms Wessels said.
