Take Back Our Mountains celebrated its fifth anniversary on Sunday by hiking up Karbonkelberg (“Call for safer mountains,” Sentinel News, January 18, 2019). The event was also the group’s 39th clean-up on Duiker Island. The large group of hikers was led by mountain guides Johan October and Lukan James. Take Back Our Mountains was formed after a spate of attacks in 2018 when two people lost their lives. Taahir Osman, of Hout Bay, founded the initiative after coming across a group of nine hikers shortly after they had been attacked. The idea behind Take Back Our Mountains is to target hot spots by hiking in large groups. For further information, contact Taahir Osman at 073 624 4287.
