Welsh rugby legend Sir Gareth Edwards recently paid a visit to Hout Bay where he learnt more about the work of local non-profit ABC for Life.

The organisaiton provides children living in Hangberg and Imizamo Yethu with access to school-based support in literacy and numeracy. Through a number of interlinked activities, it strives to empower learners with the skills and self-confidence to achieve their academic potential and embrace education as the key to their future.

During his visit with wife Maureen, Sir Gareth, who also played 10 times for the British and Irish
Lions, donated a rugby ball that
later will be auctioned at one of
the organisation’s fund-raising
events.

The rugby legend was delighted to meet Gailyn Scarpa, who has been with ABC for Life since its inception in 2007.

“It was also an honour to host Jennifer and Roger Young; Gailyn’s parents. Gailyn is doing a fantastic job in our bridging programme,” said ABC for Life project co-ordinator Nyara Purazi.
