The Rotary Club of Hout Bay celebrated the 10th anniversary of a programme that has helped young people from Imizamo Yethu and Hangberg study further after high school.
Rotary members, mentors and beneficiaries of the programme gathered in Hout Bay on Saturday February 4 to recognise its achievements over the past decade and participate in team-building exercises.
Some 22 alumni of the programme, among them a radiographer, an accountant and an advertising designer, now work for top firms and institutions across the province, according to Rotarian Keith Bull, the director of the programme, which currently has 16 students studying at universities, including UCT, Stellenbosch and UWC. Their subjects include medicine, actuarial science, law, teaching, international studies and sound technology.
After lunch, those connected to the programme spoke about their experiences.
“We left overflowing with gratitude to the younger generation for continuing to show us how to be resilient, courageous, bold and compassionate during these times in our beautiful and fragile world,” said Mr Bull.
