Hout Bay restaurants have been at work doing their bit for the Good of Our Hood campaign.
The restaurant-ratings system seeking to align local establishments with environmental sustainability was launched in Hout Bay in November last year (“Green restaurant ratings system for Hout Bay,” November 3 2017). It is driven by the village’s green watchdog and no-profit, Thrive Hout Bay.
Of the 65 eateries in Hout Bay, 29 are sending their waste for recycling, sending their food waste for composting and buying locally or growing their own fresh produce.
In December, restaurants were awarded one, two or three stars based on what they managed to accomplish. Decals were given to participating restaurants.
Ten Thrive mentors have been visiting and supporting their chosen restaurants to go green and recycle, compost food waste and purchase flowers or fresh produce grown locally.
However, according to Thrive’s Nontsikelelo Martel, some have gone beyond the requirements and have instituted water-saving measures as well.
The following restaurants have been awarded three stars: Bay Harbour Market, Suikerbossie Restaurant & Function Venue, Riverside Estate Boutique Hotel, Delish Restaurant, Dario’s Coffee Shop & Restaurant, La Cuccina Restaurant, La Parada, and Green Vine.
Those awarded two stars are Casareccio Restaurant, Health Path Restaurant, Hout Bay Coffee, Hummingbird Cafe & Patisserie, La Colombe, Cheynes, Lucky Bao, Ta Da!, Clay Cafe Restaurant, Deez Mexican Bistro, and Nutmeg Restaurant @ Earthworx.
One-star restaurants are K1 Sushi, Mariner’s Wharf Restaurant, Grill and Bistro, Workshop Pub, World of Birds, Caffeine Cafe & Deli, Chapman’s Peak Hotel, Dunes, Posticino, RTs, and Tinswalo Atlantic Luxury Hotel.
A map of green eateries in Hout Bay that have earned a star(s) has been developed and this will be shared with all awarded restaurants and accommodation facilities in Hout Bay and also be available electronically on the Thrive website and Facebook page.
“Hout Bay is fast proving itself to be the Green Republic of Cape Town. We encourage those restaurants that have not joined the Green map to come on board, and together we can create a better, greener hood for all of us,” Ms Martel said.
