Thrive has been on a new journey in the past few years and has seen some big changes.
Founding member, Bronwen Lankers-Byrne, handed Thrive over to a capable team to take it into the future.
The 2018 Enviro Quiz marked the 10-year milestone of this successful programme. One of the new additions to the team that runs this exciting event is quiz master Victoria Burnett, who kept the participants and the crowd on their feet at last year’s event.
The judging team was headed by experienced sustainability advocate Annabel Ryder, also a valuable addition to the team.
The 2019 Quiz competition will be on Biodiversity, one of Thrive’s five pillars of sustainability.
With the fires endured annually by the Western Cape, the province’s biodiversity is always under threat, and with the unquestionable climate change that we are experiencing we need to be growing drought-resistant plants, that are indigenous to the area.
Participating schools in the Thrive Sustainable Schools Programme have been encouraged and supported to improve their biodiversity gardens or to help start new ones for those schools that do not have them.
Schools in Hout Bay and elsewhere in Cape Town can register to participate in the 2019 Enviro Quiz by sending an email to enviroquizart@thrive.org.za Entry is free.
As in previous years, the study material for the quiz will be published in the Sentinel News as a series of five EnviroQuiz study articles, written by Annabel Ryder, a passionate environmental advocate.
Look out for the next five with questions and answers which will appear monthly in the Sentinel News. Study Article 1 will be published on Friday April 13 for pupils and the community to wise up on biodiversity.
The live competition will take place at Kronendal Primary School in Hout Bay on Friday September 6.
Schools will compete for eco prizes donated by the private sector and corporate donors, and individuals will answer questions on the topic of Biodiversity and Waste for spot prizes donated by local businesses.
