Primary school pupils from Hout Bay came out tops in a battle-of-the-brains competition, using the power of science to solve our real-world water woes.
The youngsters from Llandudno Primary, Ambleside School and Hout Bay International School put MacGyver to shame with the projects they unveiled during the finals of the Club Electron Primary School Science Competition, held at the Llandudno school on Tuesday October 17. The 16 teams from schools across the city who competed on Tuesday had to solve a water-related problem – an especially relevant topic in the water-starved Western Cape – and they came up with some very innovative solutions.
Hout Bay International School’s Molly Benson, Nina Cullis and Eva Schaberg won first prize for their project testing the affect of different water sources on tomato plants.
The second prize went to Llandudno Primary’s Cole Woodburn and Nikita Erni for their idea to re-use steam from showers.
The third prize was awarded to Ambleside’s Jessica Whales for her analysis of Disa River water samples.
The innovation award went to Llandudno Primary’s Cole Connelly, Nikita Damast, and Blessed Chiwedza for their idea to trap dew.
