More police are to be deployed to Hout Bay to help with the investigation into a shooting last week that left seven men dead and another three wounded.
Gunmen opened fire on the occupants of a Molokwane Street house in Imizamo Yethu and a vehicle parked outside, at 7pm on Wednesday March 27, according to provincial police spokesman Colonel Andre Traut.
“Provincial Serious and Violent Crime Unit detectives are hard at work pursuing leads in a bid to apprehend the suspects who are responsible for the death of seven adult males and the attempt to kill three others,” he said.
Five men aged 20 to 45 died in the hail of bullets and another five were taken to hospital with serious gunshot wounds. Two of the wounded died later that night in hospital.
The motive for the attack is unknown, say police.
“The acting provincial commissioner of the Western Cape police, Major General Preston Voskuil, ordered additional police deployments in Hout Bay to assist investigators to get to the bottom of the crime and to prevent any further form of violence in the area,” Colonel Traut said.
Hout Bay police chief Lieutenant Colonel Captain Jerome Syster referred our queries to the provincial police, and Hout Bay Community Police Forum chairman Anthony Chemaly said they were aware of the shooting, but he declined to comment further.
Security company boss Fareed Hoosen said they were doing extensive patrols in the area.
