NSRI rescue

A 23-year-old Grassy Park woman was rescued after her sailing dinghy capsized during a regatta in Hout Bay on Sunday April 22.

Sven Gussenhoven, NSRI Hout Bay duty coxswain, said the NSRI Hout Bay crew were diverted from a routine exercise at 2.40pm to assist the woman.

The sea rescue craft Nadine Gordimer and Albie Matthews responded and Hout Bay volunteer EMS, community medics and the provincial government’s Health EMS responded. On arrival on the scene in the bay the patient was transferred onto the sea rescue craft and treated for hypothermia and back pain.

The woman was transported into Hout Bay harbour before being taken to hospital in a stable condition. The skipper of the sailing dinghy, a young man, was towed with his sailing dinghy by the regatta stand by boat Polytech and once safely ashore, he required no further assistance.
