Biodiversity is precious and must be protected.
This was the theme of the 2019 Thrive QuizArt competition event, held on Friday September 6 at the Kronendal Primary School.
Pupils from local and visiting schools crowded into the venue, eager to show off their knowledge, and showcase their beautiful team artworks.
Congratulations to this year’s overall winner, Kronendal Primary School, which won the Greenest School Trophy.
Oracle Academy was the Senior Quiz winner and Llandudno Primary, the Junior Quiz winner.
In the Art section, Silikamva High came out tops in the senior category, and the Junior Art winners were Kronendal Primary School.
This event was the culmination of the year-long Enviro Programme, run free of charge by Thrive Hout Bay.
Local schools sign up and are supported, by the Thrive Team, to identify school projects which can be run by their Eco Heroes, focusing on Waste, Water, Biodiversity, Local Food and Energy.
The Enviro Club is run within each school as an extramural activity, overseen by a teacher and a mentor.
During the second term, the schools are audited for their achievements in the five pillars. Teams are then invited to an EnviroAudit event scheduled for mid-year, where they have the opportunity of presenting their achievements.
Thrive auditors evaluate participating schools, and each is given a series of grades. These results are then fed into the final QuizArt results and winners are chosen.
Schools from outside Hout Bay are then invited to participate in a QuizArt competition event in September.
Teams must study five articles which are published in the Sentinel News over a period of six months, from March to August, giving information about the theme topic.
These schools may also enter a large group artwork for the competition. The QuizArt event is the exciting culmination of the year’s enviro activities and an opportunity to present the theme for the next year.
The Green School winners are chosen by judges who look at the Audit, Quiz and Art results, and come up with the winners based on merit.
