An Imizamo Yethu woman is appealing for help after she and her family lost all their belongings when their home burnt down.
Nombedesho Nogwavu said a loud explosion in the shack woke the family at 3am on Wednesday.
“When the explosion woke us up, it was too late because the house was already full of fire. We lost everything.
“I think the fire was caused by the fridge and our microwave that exploded. Thankfully none of us was hurt, and some people in the community came to assist is in putting out the fire.”
She lived in the one-bedroom shack near Disa Primary School in Tambo Road with her 14-year-old son, 4-year-old nephew and 29-year-old sister.
The family are asking for groceries, clothing and blankets.
“We definitely need assistance. We have no shelter, no food, no clothes, nothing. No-one has donated anything yet,” she said.
The City’s fire department was alerted to the fire at 3.38pm.
“One fire engine and a rescue vehicle responded, but the fire was extinguished before the officers arrived,” said City Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson Edward Bosch.
The cause of the fire was still unknown, he said.
