Thirteen suspects from Imizamo Yethu are appearing in the Wynberg Magistrates Court today on a raft of charges, including murder.
The suspects, some of whom are believed to be linked to the Imizamo Yethu patrollers, were arrested during a police tracing operation on Tuesday, April 17.
“(They) were arrested for various crimes, including murder, assault grievous bodily harm and intimidation. They will appear in the Wynberg Magistrate court two today, Thursday April 19, on the mentioned charges,” said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Tanya Lesch.
Following the suspects’ arrest on Tuesday, a group of protesters gathered at the Hout Bay police station demanding their release.
Protesters from Imizamo Yethu are currently at the court to support those arrested.
Last month, allegations surfaced that a mentally-challenged man was beaten to death by members of the IY patrol.
