A fire broke out above Hout Bay Heights on Wednesday February 22. Three helicopters were dispatched to douse the flames burning large swatches of the mountain. About 100 firefighters battled the blaze, which started on Wednesday morning and was still burning on Thursday. Teams from Hout Bay, Milnerton, Constantia and Brackenfell fire stations as well as SANParks and Constantia volunteer auxiliary services assisted in the operation. Residents and businesses also donated foodstuffs and water to the fire fighters. Hout Bay police spokesperson Warrant Officer Tanya Lesch said an arson docket had been opened and no arrests made.
