It was an evening of glitz and glamour at the fifth annual fundraising dinner and dance of the Hangberg Education Trust (HET) where more than R250 000 was raised to go towards the R350 000 shortfall needed for the construction of the Hangberg Pre-Primary School.
The Hangberg Pre-Primary School, which is situated on the premises of the Sentinel Primary School, is nearing completion and will provide a safe environment where pre-school children can acquire basic skills to start their formal education.
The HET is a registered NPO with its key focus on historically disadvantaged pre-school children.
The project was made possible by investors from local and various German Rotary Clubs. The school will accommodate 120 children in two Grade R classes and one Grade 0 class. Another Grade 0 class will be added next year.
Hangberg Education Trust executive member, Tania Gray, said the evening was a great success due to the generous donations of the sponsors.
The school was designed by architect Dawie de Vaal in an L-shape with a preface overlooking the ocean.
The shape of the school is intended to protect the children from the wind while on the playground. It will have four classrooms and an amphitheatre, with a store room, garage for the school bus, caretaker’s room, and a play area where the children can eat and play during the wet winter season.
The school will be painted in different colours to inspire the children. Mr De Vaal said he used a Kingfisher as inspiration for the colours.
Ms Gray said the evening concluded with the support-a-child challenge where dinner guests were challenged by André Cheminais, to sponsor a child for a year at R4 000.
Mr Cheminais pledged support for three children and a further four pledges were received.
