Fire rips through DY, shacks destroyed

A fire ripped through Dontsa Yakhe in the early hours of Monday, destroying more than 150 shacks.

Some estimates placed the number of shacks destroyed at 200.
Twenty Fire fighting vehicles trucks and 70 firefighters were dispatched to the scene at 1.58am.
Ward councillor Roberto Quintas said no injuries had as yet been reported.

“Unfortunately one firefighter sustained injuries to his shoulder after allegedly been assaulted by a community member an my thoughts are with him as well as the affected community,” he said.

The cause of the fire is yet to be established, as is the exact number of shacks destroyed.

Fire relief and starter kits will be rolled shortly.

“A huge thank you to our service men and women who risk their lives serving and protecting our communities,” Mr Quintas said.
