Disa Primary School’s hip hop dancers took fourth place at the Grand Slam Hip-Hop Competition in Retreat on Saturday July 27.
The dancers come from Grades 4 to 7 and have been working very hard throughout the year, taking part in various competitions, according to school teacher Anri Wessels.
The school’s dance coach, Luzuko Sodladla, says he teaches 90 children at the school but took 15 of them to the competition.
“We usually train on Mondays and Thursdays,” he said.
The Disa Primary dance crew participated in the Dance Sport Club League and took second place in their first fixture, which was held in Kuils River at the Sarepta Community Hall, on Saturday June 8
Grade 6 pupil Aaliyah Isaacs, 12, said she had always had a love for dancing.
“What I love about dancing is that it allows you to express your emotions, feelings and just let loose,“ she said.
Lamees Cornelius, 12, who is also in Grade 6, said: “I find fast moves challenging but love breakdancing. My heroes are Michael Jackson and my dance coach.”
Mr Sodladla believes the dancers are on course to win more accolades when they compete in future competitions.
“The growth in the team is remarkable. They were able to make some dance studios that have been competing for years nervous. Watch this space. We want to be more than ready for next year. I’m extremely proud of how far they have reached in their first year competing,” he said.
