Twelve cyclists will be tackling the Cape Town Cycle Tour’s 45th-anniversary ride on Sunday in aid of a Hout Bay refuge for vulnerable and orphaned children.
The non-profit iKhaya le Themba supports 120 children aged 6 to 12 at its premises in Imizamo Yethu.
The cyclists have so far raised R20 000 to equip a new library, and the goal now is to raise an extra R50 000, according to iKhaya le Themba director Sara Clarke, who is part of the team tackling the 109km ride.
She says iKhaya le Themba, meaning “home of hope”, registers 30 children in Grade 1 for after-school support each year for six years. Now they have 120 children attending each day at the facility which has a homework lab, a kitchen and a classroom to aid the children’s English, maths, Xhosa, literacy and life skills.
