Hout Bay residents questioned the work being carried out on Hout Bay beach recently, with several guesses popping up on social media as to why a large excavator was seen digging trenches in the sand.
Ward councillor Roberto Quintas set the road straight and explained: “The beach and dune management programme requires occasional earthworks to take place. The system is completely artificial, ever since the building of North Shore, and requires man-made help in order to function.
It’s not a daily nor monthly exercise, but requires from time to time an intervention. Currently an inlet is being shaped in order to moisten sand and prevent sand from becoming unmanageable on the beach road.”
