The Community Crime Prevention (CCP) dog unit will be part of this year’s Beach Safety Project.
Project co-ordinator Tammy Matthysen, of the Hout Bay Neighbourhood Watch, said the unit would concentrate on the Mariner’s Wharf side of the beach and surrounds.
The watch works with SAPS, law enforcement, ADT, Deep Blue Security and CCP to patrol the beaches during the busy holiday season.
“ADT has also sponsored a guard for the duration of the season to monitor the car park and surrounding areas. The City will also provide three to four lifeguards per day.
They will be present on the beach from 10am to 6pm,” Ms Matthysen said.
Each patroller will have a yellow HBNW bib and a radio linked to the Watchcon control base.
When there is an incident on the beach, the HBNW patroller will alert Watchcon, which will then dispatch SAPS and all local security companies in the area.
Patrollers will be on the alert for criminal activity and help with reporting medical emergencies.
The project runs from December 9 to January 12. “The Beach Safety Project is extremely vital in our bay and requires all the support from residents, HBNW members and local companies here in Hout Bay,” Ms Matthysen said.
