Car falls down cliff

The driver of a white Audi was lucky to escape with only minor injuries after careering through a barrier and going off the cliff on Victoria Road near Llandudno on Monday afternoon, February 20.

Initial reports suggested the man had fled after the vehicle had rolled several times down the cliff face, but JJ de Villiers, of Community Crime Prevention, said the man had been treated at the scene. “It is quite possible that he was in shock, and ran away from the vehicle after the crash. But he did receive medical attention. His injuries were not serious.”

Camps Bay police station commander Captain Keith Chandler said no foul play was suspected. “The driver lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle didn’t roll all the way down the hill. It was quite thick shrubbery that caused it to come to a standstill. The driver only sustained minor scratches,” he said.

Mike Dellbridge, of Coastal Security which assisted on the scene, said according to eyewitnesses, the vehicle had rolled about 40 metres down the cliff and struck two rock faces before coming to a standstill. In March last year, a car went over the cliff on Victoria Road just before Oudekraal. The vehicle rolled all the way down to the ocean, and the driver taken to hospital in a stable condition.
