Concerns have been raised about senior staff vacancies and shortages of books and stationery at a Hout Bay primary school, but the provincial education department says these are being addressed.
In a Facebook post on Thursday February 22, Bianca du Plessis warned of a “massive problem” at Oranjekloof Moravian Primary School, on the corner of Main and Hughenden roads.
“The senior posts in the school have not been filled since 2020. The scholars have no textbooks, stationery. The department of education has done nothing to resolve these issues,” she writes.
“All senior posts have been advertised and some of the teachers have applied for the post but have had no feedback from the department as to the progress of the application or the posts been filled. We plead with the department of education to step up and assist.“
Ms Du Plessis told the Sentinel that her children attended the school, but she declined to comment further.
Western Cape Education Department spokeswoman Millicent Merton said the school district had been notified, in the second week of February, about a shortage of learning and teaching materials at Oranjekloof Moravian Primary School. She said the school had received donations of books from other schools and the department would deliver books to it this week.
“The school is currently being managed by an acting principal and two permanent departmental heads. Two vacant departmental head positions have been advertised, and the principal position will be advertised in the next vacancy bulletin,“ she said, adding that the recruitment and selection process for the head-of-department positions was under way.
The Sentinel was unable to reach the school for comment by deadline. Several calls to the school went unanswered and we received no response to our mails.
