Derek Gripper will perform at Maynardville’s Open-Air Festival on Sunday February 25, at 7.45pm. After recording nine albums of original material, Gripper transcribed note-for-note the complex compositions of Malian kora virtuoso Toumani Diabate and found a way of playing them on classical six-string guitar. The results appeared on his 2012 album, One Night on Earth. Derek Gripper’s most recent album, Libraries on Fire, was followed by a recording of the solo violin works of Bach, interpreted according to West African traditions. The open-air theatre is in Wynberg. Tickets cost from R150 to R180. Book through Computicket or call the Artscape on 021 421 7695.
